The Sustainable Materials Management Plan (SMMP)

Curbside recycling and composting are not enough to solve the problem of solid waste disposal in Oregon. We need to reduce the amount of material that comes into the pipeline so there is less to dispose of at the other end.

The materials we do use need to be easier to reuse and reclaim. DId you know the component parts of mattresses, household appliances, and even the houses themselves can be reclaimed?

In 2024, Benton County took the lead in convening a regional Sustainable Materials Management Plan task force. Task force subcommittees are currently addressing the following:

  • Food & organics
  • The built environment
  • Products & packaging
  • Regional solid waste management
